At the initiation of local Orthodox clergy, we evaluated the feasibility of building an Orthodox Garden & Chapel reserved exclusively for Orthodox families.
To ensure that his vision would become a reality, Mr. MacKinnon undertook an expansive study of the architectural history of Orthodox cemeteries, which included extensive travel and research that brought him to Greece, Lebanon, Russia and Italy.
This effort to design such a place was aided by many of the local clergy and Orthodox families. The concept presented here in reflects that joint effort.
The Gardens decided to establish and dedicate an Orthodox Garden & Chapel that offers the community a place to gather during services and other calendar events, where families can observe and practice customs and traditions and pass them on to the next generation.
The Gardens commissioned renowned architect, Yervant Nahikian, to produce a conceptual design. Yervant Nahikian is well known for his many classical commissions, including St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston, St. Methodios Faith and Heritage Center in New Hampshire, and his most recent project, renovation of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England.
Over the next several years the design was refined.
